Tax Preparation For Clients Living Outside of Massachusetts

If you live outside of Massachusetts, GenerationTax can service your tax needs thru the mail! We are extremely knowledgeable of all state income tax laws and can prepare tax returns for any state. You’ll simply mail us your tax information after you’ve spoken to us (800-640-9797). We will provide you with a cost estimate prior to completing your tax returns. In most instances, your tax returns will be completed within 48 hours after we receive your tax documents. As always, you’ll receive our close personal attention to ensure you get all the deductions and credits you are entitled to. We will call you upon completing your returns to discuss the results and answer any question you may have. You’ll also receive free audit assistance in the unlikely event your tax returns are ever questioned by the IRS or state tax authorities.

After you’ve spoken with us (800-640-9797) and once you receive all your official 2009 tax documents, please do the following:

  • If you are a new client, please send copies of your 2008 federal and state tax returns.
  • Please prepare a cover page with your current address, day and evening phone numbers, your email address, your occupation and your date of birth. If you’re married, please indicate your spouse’s legal name (as listed on social security card), occupation and date of birth. If you have children, please provide each child's legal name, date of birth, and social security number. On the cover page, indicate the states you lived in during 2009 along with the dates you lived in each state.
  • On the cover page, please summarize your applicable itemized deductions including: medical expenses, auto excise tax, state and local sales taxes, tax preparation fees, custodial fees, financial planning fees, interest on mortgages and home equity loans (include Form 1098), mortgage insurance premiums, real estate taxes, casualty and theft losses, investment related subscriptions, uniforms, cash and non-cash charitable donations, safe deposit box fees and unreimbursed job related expenses such as job seeking expenses, cell phone charges, tools, dry cleaning, luggage, PDA’s, online service fees, trade journals, travel, meals and entertainment. Note: We do not need you to send us actual receipts for the above items. We assume the figures you provide us with are factual and accurate. Lastly, feel free to list any other expenses you wish to deduct or comments you may have.
  • Gather all your applicable original W-2 forms, 1099 forms, interest income, dividend income, K-1 forms, pension or IRA distributions forms, brokerage account forms and student loan interest forms.
  • If you sold stocks or mutual funds, please prepare a spreadsheet showing the date you bought “each” item that was sold along with the total purchase price of “each” item sold. Note: Do not assume your cost information is provided on Form 1099. Please carefully review all your stock sales to ensure you provide us with the purchase date and cost information for “each” stock or mutual fund sold during the year.
  • If you purchased a new vehicle between 2/16/09 and 1/1/10, please summarize the purchase price of the vehicle and the amount paid in state & local sales tax on the vehicle.
  • If you qualify to deduct your graduate school expenses, please summarize on your cover page, how much you paid in tuition and books during 2009. Note: amounts paid for tuition may include loans credited to the University during 2009. If applicable, please indicate how much you received in scholarships or fellowships during 2009. Please send all your actual tuition billing statements for 2009. You can also summarize the amounts you paid for computers and peripherals you purchased for school during 2009. Note: Form 1098T (Tuition Statement) represents tuition billed during 2009. This is not the number we use. You can only deduct the amount of qualified tuition paid during 2009. Please also include a copy of your resume.
  • If you paid for dependent care expense, please provide each providers name, address, federal identification number or social security number and the amount paid to each provider. We will also need the names of each child that was cared for and the total amount paid in child care expenses for each child. If you have a nanny and use a nanny tax service to handle the employment taxes, please send your completed Schedule H.
  • If you were self employed during 2009, please prepare a simple 1 page income statement which summarizes your gross self employment income during 2009 and your applicable expenses categorized and summarized by the type of expense (i.e. advertising, equipment, supplies, etc).
  • If you owned rental property during 2009, please prepare a simple 1 page income statement showing the gross rental income your received during 2009 and your applicable expenses categorized and summarized by the type of expense (i.e. advertising, mortgage interest, real estate taxes, repairs, maintenance, condo fees, etc). We’ll also need to know when you started renting the property and how much you originally paid for the home.
  • If you are deducting a portion of your home for business use, please calculate the square footage of the area used for business. In addition, we will need to know the date you began using the space for business, how much you originally paid for the property and a summary of your utility expenses (gas, electric, oil, condo fees, landscaping, snowplowing, maintenance, etc), major home improvements and direct office expenses (repairs, business phone, etc). 
  • If you made residential energy efficient improvements to your home during 2009, please summarize the cost of the following applicable items: high-efficiency heating & cooling systems, water heaters, windows, doors, insulation, qualified solar electric property, solar water heating property, fuel cell property, small wind energy property and geothermal heat pump property.
  • Please summarize the rent you paid during 2009 and your landlord's name and address.
  • Please summarize your moving expenses. You can only deduct the cost to move your household goods, storage and the one time trip to make the final move to your new location.
  • If you are a foreign national on a F-1 or J-1 Visa, please summarize the following information on a separate cover page:
    1. Your permanent address where you are a citizen.
    2. Your F-1 / J-1 VISA number.
    3. The actual dates entered / left the United States in 2009.
    4. The number of days you were in the United States for the following years: 2007, 2008 and 2009.
  • Please send a cancelled check for direct deposit and wiring information
  • If you made any estimated tax payments for 2009, please indicate on your cover page the date paid and amount paid of all federal and state estimated tax payments.
  • Finally, please include any other official tax documents you received not mentioned above.
